1. What BDJ is
BDJ is an invite-only desktop app for finding independent music. It indexes releases that artists and labels publish publicly on Bandcamp, and helps you follow, filter, organise and — when you decide to buy — hands you to the release on the artist's own Bandcamp page.
BDJ is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Bandcamp or Songtradr.
2. Buying music
We never sell you anything and we never handle your money. Every purchase happens on Bandcamp, on the artist's or label's own page, under Bandcamp's terms and payment processing. We take no commission, no affiliate fee and no cut of any kind. We hold no card details.
Prices shown in BDJ are a snapshot of what we last read from a public page. They can be out of date. The price on Bandcamp at the moment you pay is the only price that counts.
3. Your account
Accounts are invite-only. An invite code is single-use and personal to the person you send it to. Do not publish codes publicly or sell them.
You are responsible for keeping your password safe and for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think someone else has access.
You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live.
4. Contributing to the catalogue
This one matters, so it is in plain words.
BDJ has no central crawler doing the heavy lifting. The catalogue is kept current by the app itself: while BDJ is running on your computer, it fetches a small number of public Bandcamp pages — artist pages, release pages, track listings — reads the details, and sends those details back so every member sees a current catalogue. This is what makes the app free.
This is switched on by default. You can switch it off at any time in Settings → Contribution, and the app will keep working normally.
What this uses on your machine: a small amount of bandwidth and a little CPU. What it does not do: read anything private, touch files outside the app's own storage, use your Bandcamp account or credentials, or run when the app is closed unless you separately turn that on.
What we fetch is limited by design: one request at a time, paced with a mandatory delay, only public pages, and never anything behind a login or a paywall. We do not attempt to bypass rate limits, access controls or anti-bot measures, and if Bandcamp asks us to stop, we stop.
5. Audio
BDJ streams the same public previews Bandcamp serves on its own pages, for listening inside the app. Audio is never stored permanently and never re-published. BPM analysis, where it happens, reads a preview and discards the audio immediately.
6. What you may not do
- Use BDJ to scrape, mirror or resell the catalogue, or to build a competing dataset.
- Modify the app, or drive its interfaces automatically, in order to fetch more or faster than it is designed to.
- Share your account, or trade invite codes commercially.
- Use BDJ to infringe anyone's copyright, or to work around any artist's or label's own choices about their music.
7. Your data
We store what the app needs to work: your email address, your display name, a password hash (never the password), what you follow and save, your crates and buy list, and what you have played inside the app. We use your email to send you download links, invites you ask us to send, and notifications you have turned on.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers. Catalogue details your app contributes are about music, not about you — they carry no personal information.
You can ask us to delete your account and we will. Some records are kept where the law requires it.
8. Availability, and the honest caveat
BDJ is a small independent project, run on modest infrastructure. It may be unavailable, incomplete, or wrong about a release. The catalogue is assembled from public pages and will contain gaps and mistakes. Nothing here is a guarantee of availability, accuracy or fitness for any purpose, and the service is provided "as is" to the fullest extent the law allows.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
9. Ending it
You can stop using BDJ and delete your account whenever you like. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that puts the service or its relationship with Bandcamp at risk.
10. Changes
We will update these terms as the app changes. If a change materially affects you — particularly anything about contribution or your data — we will tell you in the app rather than quietly editing this page.
11. Law and contact
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
